Bad weather seemed to pass without any rain here for the 4th. Was sweltering hot out there and I was very glad to get inside to the air conditioning. I really am not an outdoors person. I prefer to enjoy the summer green by looking out my windows. Today it is less humid but still warm with the temperatures in the upper 80's
Poor California seems to be getting all shook up this weekend. They just had another big earthquake, right after one on the 4th. This morning they are reporting them as a 6 and a 7. The pictures do tell it all with stuff flying off the shelves and smashing on the floor in stores and such. The pictures of the library with books knee deep in the aisles is really sad. Lots of clean up.

I've just got back from an unexpected trip to Wellington with my sister. My cousin's wife died suddenly (the poor thing choked to death at a dinner function ). It was nice to catch up with various family members though, and spend a few days with my remaining to sisters.

Oh my sympathies, Victoria. A sudden death through an accident like that always seems more awful. Hugs.

it is nice to catch up with family, but sad that it happens at a funeral. The poor thing, what a horrible way to die.

As we get older, sadly the family reunions tend more to funerals rather than celebrations; though a funeral is more becoming a celebration of a life.

I must have had a lot of sick older friends because so many of them are now dead and gone. Am short on relatives, just 2 cousins and their families. Both are older than I am though.

Sigh, I hate paper cuts.... I got a doozy this morning. Cut the cuticle of my finger on edge of a paper plate first, then as I didnt bother to bandage it, I ended up re cutting it on an edge of an envelope, shearing into the original slice and almost removing a bit of the skin. Yes, it's bandaged up now....

Ouch, paper cuts can be incredibly painful considering their size.

Paper cuts make for very frustrated City Council employees who have to take your fingerprints for a new passport.... because you have those tiny scars all over your fingers. I had ink over ALL my fingers, including thumb, the last time, until they found one they could live with...Thanks God my City Council is full of nice people with a good sense of humour.
Weather here was freeeeezing the last few days okay not freezing but I was cold, so there! It's mid July, and the temperatures did barely reach 15 C, which is something I'd expect in late autumn or early spring. Not in summer!
It's picking up a bit though, and the forecast is better for the weekend and next week!

Opposite weather here, with 100f forecast for friday and the weekend days.
What is that in c temps? Like 35c or something? I just cant deal with the total differences in numbers. Today is pouring rain which is OK since we had a dry spell for a week or so. Now I dont have to go out to water the pitiful tomato plants, lol. Did my Thursday grocery shopping and got wet even with using the brolly to go to and from the car.

Tanje, yes, 100 F would be roughly 37 C - perfect for me if it isn't humid. Humidity makes me dizzy already at much lower temps. (The 15 for example I mentioned above, that would be around 59 F or so).
Taking close to two weeks' worth of my holiday entitlement for this year, not planning anything, just pottering around at home, reading, walking, maybe do little day tours - just relaxing. Weather forecast is sort of promising, so we'll see. If it rains, I'll sit inside and read. If the sun shines, I'll sit outside and read

OMG Moelisa you need some blood in your veins or fat on your bones to keep you warm if 100f is comfy for you.

OK so I spit toothpaste all over the cats head this morning.... (By cat I mean Larz. Corky is pretty much a furry meatloaf without much curiosity or personality.) Larz is fascinated by me brushing and flossing my teeth. (I have electric brush and water pick flosser) He gets indignant if I brush and close the door so he cant supervise. Of course he wants to headbutt my face while I am brushing and catch the spit and drool. I do try and keep him away from it all but today he managed to get too close on a pasty spit. Had to wipe him off with a damp cloth which he didnt appreciate. Usually he insists on getting in the sink and "digging" or wants to hang half up side down to drink the water. Some cats are just "special" and Larz is one of a few.

(Larz just informed me he wanted me to put my feet up so he could sit on the footrest. Of course I did just that for my kitty overlord. Yes he has me well trained.)

lol Larz sounds very special to me.

\your temperatures sound way too hot for me. I think I'd lie in a cold bath most of the day.

Larz does sound like a very unique cat.

We are potentially due to get heat for 2 or 3 days next week, low 30sC, which is a long way below what some in America are having to deal with. I don't like the heat, but at least my school broke up on Friday, so I can be at home and choosing what I do rather than having to be in school.

I need to move somewhere where it's warmer, Tanje
I seem to have chosen the right week for my leave, as it's supposed to get really hot with temps between 30 and even close to 40 C on Thursday! Even I might balk at 40!
Wonder how much of my sport will take place, swimming and dry gymnastics I am pretty sure will happen but will be "emptier", not sure about Tai-Chi, usually if it's over 30C, they cancel it. We'll see.
Tomorrow I'll pick up my friend Wendy, and we'll go somewhere nice for breakfast. It's her last week in Germany before she'll move back to UK, to the Isle of Wight, on 1 August. I'll miss her horribly, she's not only one of my Tai-Chi instructors, but has been my best friend for over a decade, and we've been on holidays together in Venice, and last year in Malta. Good thing there's facebook, skype, whatsApp and other things to keep in contact.

Oh that is sad Moelisa to have a good friend move far away. Having worked at the VA Hospital for many years we tended to employ a lot of Navy wives (as the Naval Base is next door) and of course the Navy moves its people every few years or so. (so the wives tend to move along with their husbands) Id make a good friend and then away she would go to a new place on the opposite ends of the USA. Some I kept in touch with for years but it seems I always ended up losing them in the shuffle as they moved place to place.

Trying to get used to not having my "go to" TV station anymore. As some of you know our sat tv provider couldnt agree with one of the Major TV Networks here (CBS) and dropped them from their lineup. Sadly it was a station I watch most of the day. Worst of all it was my favorite morning news programs. The other Networks just arent the same to me. Not sure what we will do. I highly doubt Ill get Wolfie to agree to change back to cable tv even though he wont be able to get his beloved NCIS shows anymore along with many others. No Survivor, no Amazing Race, no Young Sheldon among many others we like to watch on CBS. Guess it will all work out somehow, things always do. Meantime I can catch some shows on my computer if I really need to.

Always a solution, Tanje, somehow. I am sure you will find a way.

The breakfast with my friend yesterday was nice; we went to another town, Brüggen, and to a restaurant we liked the last time we were there. We didn't know they had a breakfast buffet, i.e. as much coffee and food as you want, for only Euro 9.80 - I don't think that is a bad price at all, and the food was good.
Wendy then mentioned she never managed to go to the small animal park near this town in all her time in Germany, so we crossed that item of her bucket list Half of the thing was a kids' playground, and the other half some not-too-sad looking animals; I assume the bigger zoos just have more financial means to make more natural habitats for their critters Still, they were in good health and seemed well looked after

Nice and warm at 23 C/73 F. They're forecasting hot for today, though, up to 29 C and up to 31 C on Saturday. That's very hot for us, even if it doesn't compare with Berlin a month ago... Still, when it's that hot I mainly want to sit in the shade and drink ice-water.

We have been having decent summer temps and weather here finally. Daytime has been in the mid to upper 80's with the nights cooling down to upper 60's. Even the humidity has been decent. Something must be wrong with the weather demons!

Friday our subdivision is having its annual garage sale. I should be gathering and selling all my un-used stuff but instead I am picking up my friend Rose and we will go hunting for more stuff we dont need. (or have room for)

I went and bought a converter box (to convert digital signal to analog) for the old analog TV I have in the bedroom. Before they stopped broadcasting via analog (they now only broadcast digital signals) it got a few stations via its antenna. After a few hours of sweating and scanning and plugging in and swearing I did manage to get a few really clear stations. Sadly I figured out the antenna is a 30 mile one and most of the stations Id want are in the 40-50 mile range. Have a 50 mile indoor antenna due in from Amazon next week so we shall see if that helps.

Good luck Tanje, you did well installing that thing yourself!

Temperatures here are definitely not normal for our areas, and in fact not the norm for Germany: Yesterday my area reached 39 C (close to 103 F), and today it's supposed to be cooler with 38 C (100 F). It was okay when it was dry heat, but now it is starting to get humid, and that's too much even for me. I think I chose to take some days off at the right time, I would hate to be in the office right now

I would guess air conditioning isnt the norm over there as you dont get the extended weeks of heat like we do here. Hope you all survive. Is supposed to be a nice day here today just the upper 80's but will warm up for the weekend.

We reached somewhere between 35 and 36C / 96Fon Thursday. It was a more pleasant 27C / 81F yesterday, though still humid. Today it is raining and quite a bit cooler outside. Air con is not at all normal in homes over here, so we just have to deal with the exceptional heat as best we can. We managed to keep inside no hotter than around 32C / 90F, so a little cooler than outside which does help a bit.

Growing up in Chicago we didnt have air conditioning. Back then it wasnt common at all. I am not sure how we survived it. I remember those horrible nights when it was so hot I would go and sleep outside on the porch. A few days of bad heat isnt too much but when the walls of the house heat up they retain the heat and with buildings so close together it can get really awful. Now, some 60 years later air conditioning is very normal everywhere. I know I have gotten very used to it and am not likely to give it up.

TV station situation is really a bust. New antenna doesnt do much better than the other one and doesnt get the one station we really want in. I am just going to give up on it and watch any shows I miss on the computer. Wolfie on the other hand is really in a dilemma as almost all his shows are on that network. Not sure he will remember when they are on if some machine cant record them all for him.

The days of broadcast TV are numbered. Already, most people here watch more TV shows by streaming them, rather than broadcast TV. An added advantage is that usually you get the option to watch it at almost any time. No need to record anything, either.

We used to be able to pick up several broadcast HD channels, but because they've built a lot of multi-storey (8-13) buildings between our house and the nearest HD broadcasting tower, we'd be stuck with standard TV if we couldn't watch on our national public broadcaster's website (on our smart TV) instead. Most shows have a 30-day limit on each episode, although some shows that were produced by or for the broadcaster have unlimited availability.

I don't watch sports often, but when I do it's nice to be able to see it in HD live on our broadcaster's website/app.

Went for injection #2 in my right eye today. Not much if any improvement yet but am hoping this will help. Wasnt as scared this time as I now know what it feels like to get a needle stuck in my eyeball. The Doctor must have hit a small blood vessel as when I dabbed with tissue it came back with blood. Not to worry I was told. Sure hope not and it did stop. Now half my eyeball is dark dark red. Hmmmm charming!

when do you expect to see an improvement Janet? I tend to watch 0 tv when I am by myself but like it in company. I dont know if our broadcasters are going to go digital yet, but their playback is very poor technology, always getting stuck on the ads.

Not really sure when I might get improvement in the vision. At the moment it is only the one eye and so the other eye can compensate for the blurry patch my right eye is doing. I may not get much improvement but only a halt of the progression. Either way is better than losing ground to the blur.

So...I got a Roku streaming device, (technically one for downstairs and one for the living room, so two really), and right now I'm watching TJ Hooker starring William Shatner. Cop show that started after the original Star Trek run.

Cool, huh?

It can also stream from my Amazon Prime video and since my blue-ray player won't be able to do that after September 20-something that is even cooler.

Happy for you WolfeBro, and thanks for getting us access again. I realised when it was out of action I would have liked to save my Bad News thread as a diary and now (thanks to PreK) I have done so. It was interesting reading back to the start of the journey.
