I got this from my webhost.

QUOTE
Dear Clients,

We would like to inform you that the PHP developers have announced they will stop providing support for PHP 4 by the end of this year.

Here is an extract from the developers:
***********************************************
[13-Jul-2007] Today it is exactly three years ago since PHP 5 has been released. In those three years it has seen many improvements over PHP 4. PHP 5 is fast, stable & production-ready and as PHP 6 is on the way, PHP 4 will be discontinued.

The PHP development team hereby announces that support for PHP 4 will continue until the end of this year only. After 2007-12-31 there will be no more releases of PHP 4.4. We will continue to make critical security fixes available on a case-by-case basis until 2008-08-08. Please use the rest of this year to make your application suitable to run on PHP 5.

Read more at www.php.net
***********************************************

Since the PHP developers will no longer provide support / bug fixes / security updates for PHP 4, we will be forced to discontinue providing this service and make PHP 5 as the default version of PHP.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused you however we believe that continuing to provide PHP 4 after development has stopped will make our servers more vulnerable and prone to attack. This will eventually result in hacking attempts and may even cause server outages / downtimes which will be in no-ones interest.

We have always believed in keeping SECURITY our NUMBER ONE priority so you can focus on what’s important; running your business.

Therefore, we will be retiring PHP 4 in the first or second quarter of next year.

As advised by the PHP developers, please use the rest of this year to make your applications suitable to run on PHP 5.

I think one of those modifications I added was supposed to make this forum compatible with php5. I don't know for sure if it'll work, but there isn't much I can do really. So, if you've got stuff you'd like to keep, it might be a good idea to copy it off, just in case.

This board software was the last free version from Invision Power Board. I'm not sure if upgrading to the current paid version would still allow the portal (for the blogs) and Coppermine (the gallery) to keep the necessary references to the member accounts. Also, the new version of IPB has database changes that would probably "break" things around here too.

Wolfie - I have been in and copied my blog entries into the document I saved it all to the last time you were worried about changes.

Mary - I did that by laborious copy & paste each section but there is a faster method if you want to save a thread.

You go to the change board options and turn off signatures and avatars and probably pix as well .

Then pull up the thread you want and look in the top right corner, where it says 'print this topic' and then you get a text format version of the thread. Select all and save to the print format file to any word type document.

Don't forget to go back and reset you board options.

You shouldn't have to turn off images, siggies or anything. Just click on the print this topic, wait for the page to load completely, then go under File > Save As then for the file format select the one that has .mht as the extender. ("Web Archive, Single File" it says in I.E.) Then save that into a folder for the purpose.

[edit] Made a correction. [/edit]

Are the blogs likely to be affected? I'll have to save them somewhere if that's the case... :erm:

The portal, (which has the blogs), is bridged to the IPB 1.3.x software. The portal can not operate without the forum. If the forum stops working, the portal stops working. If the portal stops working, the blogs stop working.

The gallery is also bridged to the forum. However, the gallery was originally designed as stand-alone application. Because of the bridging to the forum, if the forum stopped working, I could conceivably get the gallery working, but because of the bridging, it uses the forum member ID system and I'd have to manually enter user names and passwords for everyone who has a gallery album.

Unfortunately, other forum software, (vBulletin, phpBB2, IPB 2.x.x, etc.), uses different member ID references in databases and internally, so the references set up with the original bridging won't work if I used other forum software.

Presumably, one of the modifications has adapted this board to work with php5. If it did, then we shouldn't have any problems. However, I wanted to give everyone a heads up, just in case.

If the forum stops working, I suppose I'll have to get other forum software and start the forum from scratch. I might be able to import the posts, but I wouldn't count on it. The gallery could either be switched to stand-alone and I'd have to manually enter user IDs and passwords, or we could start that over, too. The portal and blogs would probably have to be started from scratch.

Just like saving off the print this topic page. After the blog page loads, use File Menu > Save As then select the file format that has .mht as the extender. ("Web Archive, Single File" it says in I.E.) Then save that into a folder for your blogs.

You won't get the comments this way, but you'll have your stuff. Saving off all the comments might be more trouble than it's worth. You'd have to click on each comment link, select, copy and paste each set of comments into a text file. You'd have to keep track of which set of comments goes to which blog entry on which blog page you've saved off. That's a lot of work.

I have my BLog saved in a Word document, without the comments, unfortunately, but as a diary it's quite interesting. Good luck, WolfeBro

I guess we'll find out if that one modification has made this board usable with php5 around the first or second quarter of next year. (I wonder if they mean calendar year or fiscal year? )

You want a calendar event for this? Okay, I guess. It'll start halfway through the month of December and run to the around the 7th of January of next year.

According to a couple of people where I got the modifications that I installed a little while back the forum should be fine when my web host switches over to php 5. I'm still a little concerned though. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

You should probably try to save off your blogs anyway.

There's another update made by the guy that did the other one I installed. Presumably it'll allow this board to run under php5.

I think the portal, (where the blogs are), will run under php5 anyway.

QUOTE (From My Web Host)
We will be upgrading the existing MySQL installation (versions 4.1) to the latest MySQL (version 5) on Sunday, 24 August 2008 at 1 AM EDT (GMT -4).

We will also upgrade PHP to the latest versions of PHP4 (version 4.4.9) and PHP5 (version 5.2.6) on the same date.

Well, it looks like they'll be doing this upgrade on Sunday.

I found something that's supposed to "adjust things" so that this board will be able to work with mySql 5. (That's what runs the database for the board. PHP is what runs the scripts that create the pages.)

There is also an updated version of the thing I used earlier to (hopefully) make this board php 5 compatible. Sometime between now and when I go to bed on my Saturday night, I'm going to shut down the board and make backups of the databases. Then, I'm going to install the mySql thing and the other thing.

With luck, the board will still work after these installations and will still be working on Sunday when I get up. Since the web host will be doing their upgrading while I'm asleep.

Thanks for letting us know. Good luck!

I hope you'll post some news at the portal just in case the board takes longer than it should to come back online...

That's odd. It doesn't look like there was an upgrade to the account. The version number of PHP seems to be the same as it was before. MySql might have been upped . . . I think. (I should have written the numbers down. at self.)

I was so worried about the board, I didn't even consider that the portal would not be compatible with PHP 5. They did the upgrade between my last post and this one.

So far it looks like I might not be able to get the portal back. If I remove the mod that lets the board work with MySql 5, the board stops working and the portal still don't work.

There's a couple of things I can try, but . . . I don't really see it working at this point.

I'm sorry guys. I thought the only problem I'd have would be with the board.
